Toyota sackings

That's not good to see that many people terminated at one time...ever.

If there is a bright spot, Toyota is legendary for teaching employees valuable skills such as Lean Sigma, 5S etc. I hope they can be resourceful and leverage those valuable skills as well as the practical knowledge from the line to help them find new jobs.

Quite clever really - puts the ones still there on their toes.
So they might work better and production may stay the same with less workers.
Not good for our economy, but that's business.
 
I now eagerly await an announcement from AusGov that taxpayers are gonna give Toyota another $XXX million dollars.

Now now now, my old toyota Hilux just keeps plodding along delivering beds and furniture to needy families.

Another bad day for workers and their families.

In the last few years just west of there they have built homes on wonderful vegetable growing land. I know what will be more needed in the long term.

What I say is all a bit of a contradiction in some ways but folks we are heading into tough times.

Few beers going down this week no doubt, pain wont hit till the money runs out.

For a moment, put yourself in the shoes of a Toyota worker who is suddenly 'put on his toes' due to several of his colleagus being retrenched - exactly how are YOU going to work better to become more efficient? Overtime??? What a joke.
 
100s of them in Adelaide.
Mitsubishi -------
Many still haven't found work yet
Many have.
The associated trades supplying them will be next.

Many many many small businesses go to the wall every month
Way way more than 350 people lose their job.
What about them?

Doesnt make this any less tragic, Australia is looking down the barrel of a recession.

Things aren't good in Vic, SA or Tas that's for sure. The latter two are in recession already, and Vic doesn't look too great either.

Business is business though and I do accept that sometimes things like this are necessary. That said, the means by which Toyota has gone about it brings back memories of a few horror mass sackings in the 90's and it's a pretty rotten way of doing business.:2twocents

I think Vic may also be in recession, I agree that Toyota handled this disgracefully.

No need to wait, sinner. Our esteemed prime minister has apparently already declared that the government (taxpayer) will be there for the Toyota sacked workers.

Exactly. Why is there apparently something special about car making that obliges the taxpayer to subsidise it?
 
Toyota have released 500 LFA @ $375K USD each and lose money on each one, Chev Volt cost the US taxpayer 250K each, not sure how much each Manaro/ Chev Cruz cost the OZ taxpayer be all taxpayers are being shafted.
At least the new Toyota's from Japan is radio active.

'Apparently' does not = fact.

Those retrenched have been compensated accordingly by Toyota. The package they received, which seems generous to some, is industry standard, and there is no requirement for monetary compensation by the government to cover any shortfall.

As far as the issue of whether the car industry deserves special recognition and assistance from the government (I think there was a recent thread on this matter) I am formly in the 'yes' camp. Proof of its value came with the news overnight that Holden is to design cars for China. They are able to do so because of the skills and expertise within the Australian auto industry, so it is well worth saving IMHO.
