JB Hi-Fi bait and switch

The first image is what pops up on JB Hi-Fi's website after hitting "click for more" in the advertisement (image 2) from The Australian.

I thought this was illegal. It's obviously not, or JB have made an awful blue.

Yes, it seems to be one of the latest tactics and not just JB.

My daughter has been wanting a vacuum that handles cat hair and had pretty much decided on which one she wanted. To her delight she found it advertised last week for half price and with a carpet shampooer as a bonus.

We went into the shop with granddaughter thinking this was going to be a quick purchase of said vac.

But no. The salesman then proceeds to tell us that what she really needs is the next one up (which is selling almost at full price) because it has a turbo head. So then he pulls out all his power heads, plugs them into this monster machine fixed to their floor, rubs capok into the carpet and then wastes our time wanting us to try all the different power heads - and then asking us to rate out of ten what we thought. All he did was make us more annoyed.

In the end, we walked out of the shop as young granddaughter has had enough and told him we would go and get something to eat and come back in after we have given it some thought (meaning "cooled down"!)

We go back in after eating and there is a different salesperson there. I apologised for being somewhat irrate and explained that I didn't come in for a demo of machines we had no intention of buying - we had come in for the special. He was most helpful (he had seen the whole earlier sorry saga...lol) and even checked in the pet vac box to make sure it did have a turbo head. And it did.

Obviously their sales people had been told to switch people from the special, but this guy was simply waaaaay too pushy and was outright lying about the turbo head.

Clearly a time for buyers to beware.

I gather from the above that the store actually had the unit on special for sale.

JB seem to be going one step further and advertising a product for a price they are not prepared to honour.

That is false advertising, is it not ?

Yes, they had it in store. However, it was a blatant attempt to get us to switch once inside the store and to confuse the buyer while trying to switch to another product.

Hmmm, seems to be ok for me - From what I can tell I'm able to ick up that LCD in the store around the corner for the advertised price or buy it online.

Seems like a bloody good deal, may not see that again for a while.

I was in JB today, and they have some very dodgy bait advertising on their notebooks, a big 30% off, but it's only on a mouse if bought on top of the full price.

They must have some new joker in sales or marketing.

The JB flyer received with yesterdays smh has the same product/price featured on the front page. They would be asking for big issues with the accc if they were running the add campaign without having a reasonable volume of the product available to sell at that price.

I actually bought that TV yesterday for the $399 price
VERY good deal by the way...
So not sure it was really a scam by JB, and the vendors did not try to sell us other models

Went and checked this TV out yesterday, unlike the more, high class, expensive ones they show closer to the front of the section, this particular TV was positioned towards the back corner facing away from the front of the shop, not clearly visible to people first walking in the store. I would have to agree, it is a crazy awesome deal but obviously they intend it more to be a crowd bringer as opposed to a major profit maker.

I'm almost tempted to buy it as a hdmi hook up to the pc as a big computer screen. LED LCD full HD etc etc and low power consumption. How long is the guarantee/warranty?

Why didn't you just tell him you knew what you wanted and he wasting his time? It doesn't seem like he was doing anything wrong, just trying to up sell you.

They have about 10 stacked up with 1 on display at my jb, smack bang in the front door. I actually missed them at first because I was looking for them hidden in the tv section. Tempted to get one but not sure I "need" one lol.

lol - I did - repeatedly and he refused to listen and kept going with his stupid demo. After about 10 minutes of this nonsense and telling him we didn't want the more expensive brands, we walked out and told him firmly that we had come in to purchase the special and would come back after getting the child something to eat and give us time to cool off. There were two other staff members watching in disbelief too and thankfully it was one of them that served us on our return.

This guy simply doesn't know that "no" means "no". While we were initially polite, we ended up not being so due to his stubborness and annoying persistence.

Hehe...fair enough. I would have just walked up to someone else and asked. I can't stand pushy sales people. And you're buying a vacuum, it's not like you need someone there reassuring you that your bum doesn't look big in it!
