Sorry if I'm being obtuse,drsmith, but what's the significance of the numbers 20 - 25?

Good luck if you have even the remotest expectation that the education system is going to teach children anything like this. Quite the reverse, which will echo what is purveyed in our universities.

This link shows a grade 2 spelling list. GRADE 2. I thought it was bad enough in GRADE 5. And you didn't think kids were being brainwashed with this rubbish that is not a fact and is being contested more now than it probably ever was.

AGW is becomming a joke. Climategate emails certainly showed it had the possibility of being a scam and more are coming clean on it now.

Here are the original list of words for GRADE 2 from the link. DrSmith's would be much more appropriate...:D

23. electricity
24. responsibility

No offense, but you just sound really paranoid to me. If it had the word "sheep", I bet you would claim they are raising people to be New Zealanders or something.

I have been helping a grandchild a fair bit with homework and they used a full term on global warming. Assignments, spelling, art, stage performances etc. It was full on and clearly brain washing. They are teaching this as if it is fact, when it isn't.

And then they don't have sufficient funding to help kids that are struggling academically but this political brain washing is part of the cirruculum and plenty of funds for that.

If you call someone objecting to young kids being politically brainwashed 'paranoid', then just go along your merry way and life will teach you it's own lessons.

Good heavens, some of the otherwise quite smart people on this forum wouldn't be able to spell those words correctly!

I've met very few Grade 2 children who would be able to spell these words, let alone understand their meaning/use them appropriately in a sentence.

Julia, it was at the end of a list of simpler words such as "dear, fear", etc and often those longer words are for the academically gifted children. And it might depend which state.

Even so, global warming should not be taught as a fact in a school curriculum, let alone primary school, There was an article recently which explained some children are having nightmares and yet Garrett refuses to remove it.

Those are big multi-syllabic words for a tacker in Year 2!

Teachers unions are as Left as they come. It doesn't pass without notice that PM Gillard's true calling and metier is education. Beyond question that our kids are being brainwashed in the schools, and something needs to be done about it.

I think the biggest nightmare is that Garrett is education Minister. The future of education in this country (and others, NZ etc) is a real concern. I have spent an extraordinary amount of time researching the educational options for my kids and shudder at some aspects of the "cookie cutter" style of education both in the public and private domains. My guys go to schools that are secular, progressive/ democratic as I want them to be in an educational system that allows them to be free thinkers, able to critically analyse the world around them.

I am forever grateful to my grade 5 and 6 teacher who substantially disregarded the official curriculum in an effort to encourage thinking about a whole range of topics.

Incidentally, CO2-induced warming of the Earth was one of the topics he broght up. It was a theory only back then of no political relevance and was taught as such - a scientific theory that may be of future importance. Energy generation inevitably came up as part of that, as did various experiments with greenhouses and CO2. All a bit of fun really, but it got everyone thinking. We even built a working model solar water heater.

Other topics I remember being taught included the legal system, politics, the financial markets and industrial safety. Then we had a go tinkering with computers and somewhere in there we made a film and did some woodwork too.

All of that was in grade 5 and 6 at a public school and yes, we did perfectly well at the usual maths, reading etc too. I was very, very lucky to have a teacher like that.

The most important thing? two of them. First was failure. You most certainly could fail in that class - and you'd be on lunchtime detention if you did. Second was practice - there was always a practical component to everything he taught. Hence we all made damn sure we passed and actually learnt something.

I'm relieved to hear that, sails. Not so relieved, however, to hear of the brainwashing.

It doesn't seem to have worked terribly well in her case if it's measured by capacity to think logically and to pronounce some basic English correctly.

Garrett should not be minister for anything. He is utterly incompetent in any sphere.

In the last couple of years I've had quite some contact with children who are home schooled, from four different and unconnected families.
I'd have thought these children would show some adverse effects from the lack of social interaction, but on the contrary, they are without exception very bright, very sociable, mature for their age and a great credit to their parents.
Is it something you'd consider, new order?

I have to be honest and say that while I think the concept of homeschooling can work well, it is not for my family. The high school kid knew more than me many years ago and the primary schooler is interested in just about every subject possible so I could not cater to either of their needs. I am not an overly patient person, add to that my need for a lot of time alone, it just would not work for us.

We are fortunate to live in a big city which does offer great non mainstream alternatives for education and have found places that cater to the kids needs beautifully.

Anyone who is feeling dissatisfied with the mainstream system check out progressive and democratic schools.

On the eve of Prime Minister Julia Gillard's carbon tax package announcement, psychologists and scientists said the lessons were alarmist, created unneeded anxiety among school children and endangered their mental health."

In this instance the damage being caused in the name of "science" goes far beyond the pale to innocent minds.

It would be better to show them that it is possible to save the planet from this:-

Is it though? I am not so sure. Certainly not with these sorts of attitudes, and not with people thinking that global warming is somehow "fake". Before anything can be done there must be very strong will among people to make very serious sacrifices in order to address the big problems. This will not occur without adequate education.

Global warming will bring death, injury and destruction, this is not an exaggeration in the slightest.
