If Water Planners Had Listened to Bob Katter

Yeah I don't mind auld Bob... he rants on a bit sometimes, but he's a down to earth practical person.

I think that Bradfield Scheme has a bit of merit and ought to get more consideration and some sort of progressive implementation for the longer term decentralisation of the state to cater for the increased population growth.

I agree. Bob may be a bit eccentric but he has been around for a very long time and has more clues about what will and will not work than most of the current useless batch of politicians.

The Bradfield scheme was rejected because of cost.
Cost seems to be no object when the NBN is being pushed.

I know which I'd think would be the more useful spending of taxpayer dollars.

I also like Bob Katter's lack of guile and preparedness to just say what he thinks.

Hi.
Strongly agree with the above.
Bob is seen to be a old school politican by the moden day political vote chasers.

The public have to understand that the "old school" built the country, while the modern day polly"s seem to be hell bent on destroying it.

One would hope that the last 12 months of waste, bad decisions and control of the public purse will lead to better constructed and more transparent policy's in the future.

Cheers

All those people squashed in to the southeast corner of Queensland make for an unsustainable population. The Bradfield scheme would be the way to get those poor buggers out of that area that is either prone to drought or flood.

I agree Julia, the NBN, what a waste, and so much good pasture west of the divide not being used for lack of water, and there is enough rain to keep the reef going as well.

joea, you have hit the nail on the head, the Leadership of the Mouse Gang are more used to finding problems rather than fixing them, and they wouldn't understand the notion of Nation building.

Bob has been a great supporter of an idea to turn the rivers inland to create vast new farmland west of the Dividing Range.

He was laughed at, but if he had been listened to, much of the damaging floods may have been averted.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradfield_Scheme

It is known as the Bradfield Scheme.

OH NO, YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!

It will threaten the endangered spiny black pigmy hairy nosed mouse that happens to live there.

^^ That wouldn't worry Bob.

I well remember when I first arrived in Oz in 1984. There was a news program on the telly and the story was about a man who had been taken by a crocodile somewhere around Cairns.

Bobs quote has stayed with me ever since

"We dont want any crocodiles swimming in OUR rivers"

I don't think he realised the crocs had been around a lot longer than he had!

Surprisingly even-handed article from Bob Ellis, even some kind words for Abbott, and did he tear strips off the 'Mouse Pack'. I actually don't mind Martin Ferguson of that group, in a least worst kind of way.

Bradfield Scheme - in today's political climate? More chance they'd come out in support of whaling.

Civilised people's hands are already over their faces every time she speaks....

...And of those independents, Ellis singles out Bob Katter, "my favourite human being". At one point, Ellis writes that Katter "in his huge white hat ... resembles 15 simultaneous Johnny Cash songs bayed from the back of a speeding truck in monsoon rain".

GG, we have to get rid of the GREENS first. Bring back Pauline and the pied piper.

The pied piper has traditionally been portrayed as Green.

Medieval folk knew their nutters well.

Every member of Parliament should be given a copy of that pdf, doc, what a drought proof nation we would be if it were implemented.

gg
I dunno about the pipeline from Esperance to Kalgoorlie. Only one is required regardless of whether it transports dam water or desalinated seawater.

Federal pollies, if they read it, would read from east to west and stop before they got to Adelaide, so, on that basis, the Esperance/Kalgoorlie pipeline proposal can be excused.

Bit of red in his outfit too, GG...:D

Poor ole ALP, getting in to bed with the Greens, they'll get more than a rash.

The Greens are totally against any dams or infrastructure spending.

At least we have Bob in Parliament to keep them honest.

Getting back to the Bradfield Scheme and Dams, Floods and Drought.

We need to somehow turn all that water that comes rushing down the eastern side of the Divide, and store or turn it westward, to create new food bowls for our future generations and avoid catastrophic floods and drought.

Now that would be nation building, none of your $300,000 school pergolas or nbn.

Nation building by spending all the cash in QLD
Let me guess where you live.

When I went to school, I was never taught that the Great Dividing Range stopped at the Tweed River.

From Wikipedia

The Great Dividing Range, or the Eastern Highlands, is Australia's most substantial mountain range and the third longest in the world. The range stretches more than 3,500 km (2,175 mi) from Dauan Island off the northeastern tip of Queensland, running the entire length of the eastern coastline through New South Wales, then into Victoria and turning west, before finally fading into the central plain at the Grampians in western Victoria. The width of the range varies from about 160 km to over 300 km

More water westward could also support more natural vegetation and a greater diversity of life in general. The additional vegetation could be a potential carbon sink for the future.

If one is going to be Green, one should be able to have their hardcore raw vegan food and eat it too.
