Mr Garreffa said it was a little known fact that between 50,000 and 70,000 horses were slaughtered in Australia every year for human consumption in other parts of the world. It was time to end the hypocrisy, he said.

"It has never been sold before for domestic consumption in Australia," he said.

I can't see any big problem with this, but am a bit concerned if it can give you the trots?
 
After a day at the racing where your fancy was last past the post, there may be an element of satisfaction to be gained from having a horse burger for dinner that evening.
 
I've had horse once in the Netherlands. It was quite tasty and if not told that it was horse you would easily think that it was beef.

I don't know if it is still sold there.

with lamb and other meat prices going through the roof, us aussies should eat what we have millions of... Kangaroos!

IMO, Kangaroo should be the staple meat of Aussies. The little buggers breed like rabbits and they are adapted to our harsh drought prone conditions more than those fluffy little lambs.

I'd definitely try horse if it was on the menu; but bring on kangaroo for every Aussie man, woman and child!

You wouldn't want to eat a racehorse though, unless you wanted to run a marathon next week.

Just don't get swabbed. ;)
 
It's bound to be served on a bed of sugar cubes with complimentary after-dinner carrots. There is no doubt going to be a few nay sayers, and a few restaurants might be struggling for business when people see their customers walking out with long faces. :D:banghead::eek:

And definitely don't take your kids there to eat it, they'll be kicking the crap out the door in the back all the way home! :eek:
 
Have had horse before in Switzerland. Was a bit like veal if i remember correctly
 
Apparently if you eat too much of it, it can make you giddy.

I picked up some suspicious looking hamburgers at the supermarket recently.
 
Can't say I'll be eating any horsemeat quite honestly.

I've tried croc and roo both of which I have enjoyed but horsemeat is a bit like dogmeat to me.

Unlike pigs and cows and sheep and chickens, horses to me seem like quite noble, loyal athletic and fine spirited animals.

I'm not in such great need of a food source as to eat horsemeat.

we ship a fair bit of kangaroo meat for overseas consumption too... I heard Germany was a huge buyer; can't remember where i got that from though.

There was a bit of an effort a few years back to get it a more appetising name, because generally, people don't like to use the same name for the food that they use for the animal when it walks around. (sheep/lamb/mutton, beef/cow/cattle/veal, pork/pig etc). I don't think they settled on anything though. "Kanga" and "Roo" are a bit too close to the usual name.

Kangaroo is ok to eat, a bit too lean for my usual liking, but i could get used to it. And i could stand to lose a bit of weight, to be honest. :D
 
Have eaten raw horse in Nippon

I had it with Soba noodles and a raw egg

it was nice.

Prefer whale though.
 
I think horse is still legally able to be put into processed foods under the label "meat". So, when you buy a pie, sausage, dim sim, etc etc, with "meat" on the ingredients list, it might be horse. At some stage we'll all have eaten horse, legally (as well as dogs, cats, and human murder victims, though less legally and less often). Lots of horses get made into pet food, and we use various body parts for glue, soap, gelatine, etc. I'm not too precious to think it's okay to eat cows, pigs and chickens but then turn my nose up at horses and other animals. I think I slept through the day our deity sent out the memo telling us which animals were okay to eat and which were to be put on a pedestal. Actually, I must have also slept through the day that deity was crowned/haloed/dubbed/winner of the skolling contest at the local.

Does anyone know where I can tuck into some Kangaroo meat in Japan?
Any restaurants/venues in Japan would be great? Especially those that also cater with a kids menu? ;)

I recently bought a pie at Brumbys. It was labelled "Chunky Beef Pie" and cost $4.75. It contained a mixture of black sludge and gristle. I am sure horse meat would be preferable to cow's udder and unidentifiable sludge.

You would think with a name like Brumbys they would at least offer Chunky Horsemeat Pies.
