It seems that computer technology is constantly improving every few months with faster processors and hardware, yet newer software is constantly demanding more processing power.

Will we ever reach a point where our computers are up and running in a matter of seconds and not the minutes that it takes with vista/win 7 even with the fastest hardware?? (I remember my Win95, 98 computers taking similar amounts of time to boot as my vista comp now, which is at least 20x faster in terms of processing capabilities)

It seems that with any hardware improvements, software demands increase at the same rate, resulting in no net gain...

Boot time is not the primary concern of a computer system, nor should it be.

Applications running the same as on 95? Ha, I wish my computer was that good back then. Back in 95, if I was running M/S Word, Internet Explorer, and maybe a game of chess; the entire system would be running like a dog.

Now? I have about 23 Google Chrome windows open, 2 Virtual Machines running, a Skype window, multiple documents in Word open; and everything is still lightning quick. No improvements? Ha. The Virtual XP runs better than my 95 ever did!
 
Have to agree with Nyden, I lived in country WA and had win 98 and 28.8kpb net connection for a few years, two internet explorer pages open dam near stalled the computers refresh rate, now I can have basically anything I want open with the refresh rate equally quick on all of them not only because my net connection is better, but the operating system I have now is better designed to handle it. Web pages are more complex now than what they were and computers need more guts to keep things flowing, honestly I don't know how I would survive going back to win 98 after the snapiness of XP. Havent seen Windows 7 yet and have avoided Vista because a lot of programs I have for XP arent compatible and I am loath to rebuy the newer versions or alternate programs.

Why don't you use hibernation? Only 20 secs for my XP to start up. :)
 
Yes I agree it is futile and can be avoided depending on what the computer is used for.

I have had my computer with XP Home OS for 5 years last month and it runs faster than when I bought it. The main reason is because I have a 3 times faster connection speed and the second reason is because I don't have applications a) trying to access websites for automatic updates b) download stuff without my prior consent c) running in the background. Fleas are rampant on the www so I do a registry cleanup on start and periodic virus, malware, trojan, spyware etc. scans.

Christmas wish is a multi-screen arrangement such as what Zenview has to offer.

That would be nice and probably the future but for the moment I am happy with these times. Stopwatch used to acquire times.

From pressing start button to Operating System loaded = 38.7 seconds.
From Operating System loaded to internet ready (google search page) = 34.5 seconds.
The start up processes and applications in that time are various and to do with the OS but Norton AV and PC Tools Registry Mechanic chew the most CPU.

The 1 minute 13.2 seconds to internet ready is acceptable to me.

well, put it this way. The CPU technology today is like a very, very basic QUANTUM computer (ie. run several programs at the same time). So it's actually quite impressive when you think about it like that.

If you want instant start up, then wait for Magnetic RAM to come out but that is still in testing stage
 
My computer is never turned off. ( dont ever worry about boot up time)
I run a web server with all major scripting languages supported,
MYSQL server,
FTP and mail servers,
firefox with 7+ active tabs open usually with graphic intensive pages like google finance,
MSN messenger,
Incredible charts,
Large office spreadsheet,
Anti virus,
Media streaming server,
on a 22 inch full HD monitor running in full HD res.
And at any time I can start up a modern 3d game like Crysis and dont have to close anything.

But heres the kicker. My pc is 4 years old!


amd 4000+ x2
2 gig ddr400 ram
222 gig raid array
ati x1950xt video card.

a modern computer built in the last 6 months will be close to twice as fast as mine. But I cant really see anyone needing anything that fast. Accepting of course some kind of specialist server platform or modern hardcore gamer.

but for a home business/trader/casual gamer. you can live with a top of the range pc from 4 years ago. this whole thing would probly cost you about $300 second hand.

Depends what you run on your computer. Operating systems scale, but most business uses are pretty light, including the most the majority of trading setups.

Monitors are amazingly cheap these days. I remember poker in '05, everyone was rushing to get a dual, triple or quad Dell 2001fp setup, at about $600us a screen (they were ~$900 here?).

Have you thought about using them in portrait mode? The best setup for a triple monitor system in my opinion, particularly if they're widescreen monitors.
 
With apologies for asking a question not actually related directly to the topic, since the last update from Windows two things have happened.

1. I have no sound. Have gone through the Device Manager, checked all is properly connected etc. Can fine no explanation.

2. When trying to access something in Word, I get the screen that says there is no file associated with this and to re-install Set up. If I'm trying to access a Word document I've saved, this eventually comes up after the above warnings appear a couple of times.

I have no idea how to re-install anything.

Can anyone kindly offer some advice?

Thanks nomore4's, this is the screen setup up I would like but I have to admit the cost is a bit of a deterent.
 
That setup is easy to do and cheap too. get a Laser 3 monitor stand off ebay for 60 bucks throw a dual head card in your box for 100 and its done.
if you want a link to the seller pm me. I bought one and have been delighted with it, its metal not plastic and holds my 3 x 19 in monitors. Plus it was delivered in 3 days. Their communication was fantastic too and their ozzie not singapore etc.

Julia go to control panel / add remove programs double click on Word and choose reinstall. Throw in your disc. Before that you might like to try rightclick on the word doc and go "open with" then select word in your list of programs and check always use this program.

Reinstall your sound cards driver by inserting the disc and double clicking the setup.exe file you will find on its cd. If that fails pm me I will walk you through diagnosing the fault
