All the thou shalt nots and coverting of goats and worshiping of one God in the Old Testament Ten Commandments just doesn't seem that relevant to me in this modern world.

I'm interested in putting together a list of ten moral guidelines, or values, or rules, that should guide living in the modern world. Rules that might be relevant across the planet, if possible.

My first suggestion would be:

Treat others as you would want them to treat you, or
Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you.

Anyone got any good ideas?

The first, mate, is that I am the The Lord God , (not me but the god mate)
and you will not have other gods before me.

A useful first moral guideline to get all the godbotherers on side.

So for any silly bastard looking at the sky, history, or text, his god is right, and bugger the rest.

And kennas unless you let this pass through the slips for four, the rest will be subject to godbothering nonsense.

So lets go on to the second.

gg

1). Jab with the left whilst guarding the jaw from a right cross.

2). Beware elephant traps.

3). Enjoy yourself whilst you can, as you'll be dead soon enough.

4). There is only one truth. Remember it and never complicate it.

5). Opportunity comes rarely, so jump on the white charger whilst it waits. It will be gone soon enough and may never return.

6). The first fence in life everyday is called "moderation in all things", jump it cleanly or every day you don't is lost.

7). Whether gold or God be your lead. No matter which, as long as you achieve your destiny.

8) Everyone has a reason for being here (whether god exists or not), and if you die young it ends.
It does not mean you did not have it in you, it just means you must guard it most carefully.

9). In the end we all go on the same journey in the next. Never think you are better than the lowest of the low or worse than the highest of the high.

10). There are no gods or prophets in this world. Only those who like or think they are something by using their name or studying what they said and commanding you and others by it. Do not listen to these false gods.

1. Do under others as you would hope they would do to you.

2. Live a good life.

2. Prepare for a quick painless death.

I suppose it might help to splash up the Old Testament version to get an idea of what could stay, or be amended to suit today also. And what should definately go.

1. You shall have no other gods before me
2. You shall not make for yourself an idol
3. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God
4. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
5. Honor your father and mother
6. You shall not murder
7. You shall not commit adultery
8. You shall not steal
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
10. You shall not covet your neighbor's slave etc

I think we can comfortably ditch 1-4, although having a day off might be a good idea to keep physically and psychologically sound.

6 and 8 are covered by various laws, so do they need to be included? Or, maybe, 'you shall obey international and your country's law', or similar.

Is adultery covered by law in the West? I don't think so. Women obviously get stoned to death in Islam for this one, but elsewhere? Does this rate a Top 10 in the modern era, or can it be covered under a larger umbrella? Something to do with family?

I like honouring your father and mother, but why not your grandparents, and aunties and uncles, and ..... Maybe it could be tranformed into simply respecting each other at some higher level.

9 is basically don't lie I think, so can be covered somewhere.

10 is about materialism, which could find it's way in under another form also.
But we can leave coveting wives, donkeys and slaves out of it I reckon.

never judge a book by its cover

never judge a mans way of walking through life until he crosses your path

always baste goats when on spit regurly

No extra-curricular activity with goats.

Listen to quality music.

Eat well (as in quality and not too much quantity) and as often as possible with friends.

Have good manners, this is our system for not pissing each other off.

Take a joke.

Never argue with idiots, they drag you down and beat you with experience.

Never try to teach a pig to sing, it will frustrate you and it annoys the pig.

Clichés I know, but good secular commandments.

This might turn into the ASF 100 commandments. :)

Composing the list.

My first suggestion would be:

Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you.

I think this one is pretty much all encompassing.

Question, what will we do with financial advisors (and the like) that collect secret commissions, as they do not comply with this basic rule of fair play?

Suggestions:

Try to do things which help you to become, or to stay, fit and healthy.

Try to not be wasteful.

Do not behave like a ********. If you are uncertain if what you are doing is what a ******** would do, you are most probably being a ********.

Have a sense of humour.

Be mindful.

I really like this one.

Agree on all counts. Plus maybe some appropriate punishment for those indulging in weird stuff with goats.

I think this one is pretty much all encompassing.
Yep, this was in response to the "Do unto others....." which is my core belief.

I'm not sure about including "Honour your father and mother". There are parents who should never have bred, and absolutely don't deserve being honoured.

I like your idea, Kennas, and reckon we should stick with those commandments that are absolute in the view of all of us.

My first suggestion would be:

Treat others as you would want them to treat you, or
Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you.

I don't see how this would work for a bunch of traders.I wake up each morning with the opposite view in mind. To take others hard earned money and not give them a chance to do the same.

Come on guys Traders 1st commandment is,

Do to them before they do to you.

Anything else and you are deluded and/or broke.

I'm collecting them all. Should be an inspiring and funny list.

I may separate the sincere from the take-the-piss commandments later, but at the moment, the list goes on.

:)

Give thanks! :D

1. Turn your gods lest they turn you
2. Never vote on Idol
3. The Lord's name shall not be taken in cricket
4. Black Sabbath is no less holy than Solomon Grundy
5. Never seek you biological father
6. Thou shall not murder Stairway to Heaven
7. Thou shall commit thy adults at the right time
8. Never accept, steal or eye on awe (Chinese adaption)
9. Never bare your neighbours to Jehovah's witness
10. Covet thy neighbour's as surely they were first borrowed hence

Going to hell TH! :)

1) Play the ball and not the man.
2) Anyone who says he is the Lord God should be tarred and feathered.
3) Keep your posts to the matter at hand
4) Admit when you are wrong
5) You have an opinion, so do they. Fair bump, play on.
6) Keep it factual and coherent
7) Read what has been written at least twice
8) Don't go into a gun fight carrying a knife
9) Who really gives a **** if the spelling is not up to scratch
10) Repeat Rule number 2 as your mantra.

Nice one TS. :)

Although, I do care about grammar myself.

I won't add this to the Commandments though, aiming for the general moral code. I'm not sure if 'Don't go into a gun fight carrying a knife' fits.
