Saw "Ride like a Girl" yesterday in the Theatre, made me cry, Rachel Griffiths knows how to direct which surprised me a little (though I know it shouldn't have). Great movie.

Anyway this Melbourne Cup is super hard, I think there are at least 14 chances.
Anyone got a clue on this one?
 
Not a racehorse fan really, my Dad loved going to the cup and stay at his Brothers pub in North Melbourne, dreamt a winner no 7 overnight, he had 7 of us children at the time and had just cut 7 bales of wool.

Of course no 7 won.

I like 13 and will back it. Have not backed a horse for years but feeling better of late and trying to enjoy the world.

Ok, here we go.

1/ and legal terms horses are livestock.What that basically means that in the eyes of the law they are an economic unit and subject to such legislation. They are not regarded in the same way as companion animals such as dogs and cats.

2/ Thoroughbredd are bred for the express purpose of racing. Therefore if thoroughbred horse is not economic or for whatever reason no longer suitable for racing, they must be moved on, somewhere.

There is an aftermarket within the industry for both economally viable breeding stallions and mares. So those ones can live out their lives having sex and having babies.

There is also an aftermarket for riding horses... All the equestrian sports, stock horses, kids riding horses and whatnot.

There is however a surplus, and/or horses unsuitable for the above aftermarket purposes.

What should we do with them?

If the abattoir at was not an option there would be left to starve or suffet miserable lives and deaths uncared for in inadequate circumstances.

Therefore in those circumstances the abattoir is actually the most humane option. That is not to say that the treatment that was filmed in a recent program is acceptable, it is not in any way shape or form and there must be some serious reform there for sure.

But the emotive argument that racehorses are taking to the abattoir after racing is an agendized and overly simplistic propaganda, designed specifically for virtue signalers to express outrage.
 
There is a further truth about the horse abattoirs in that not all of the horses taking there are racehorses.

Go to any saleyard and, yes, there are proportion of racehorses. But there are many more riding horses, ponies, draught horses, stock horses, all sorts of different types of horses, all there for various different reasons.

They are livestock, it's the reality for some.
 
Actually I have hundreds if not thousands of stories were horses off the track have gone on to do amazing things. Not just in terms of performance in riding sports but also just as much loved weekend hacks for housewives.

That is my job, the care of these horses feet and I see them every single day.

I hope the "serious reform" you mentioned is implemented.

It's a pity that is takes the media to uncover these things when people in the industry know about them but still keep quiet (and that obviously applies to a lot of industries).

But I suppose someone in the industry tipped off the ABC in the first place so they are not all bad.

I'm all for exposing such practices.

But as far as I am concerned, any non vegan human is also, by the same rules as applied here, complicite(sic?) in such cruelties.

There is progress but I certainly do agree that more improve needs to be made all around in the animal husbandry insustries.

I've basically given up meat , mainly for health reasons but there is a "conscience" aspect to it to.

But anyway, let's all have a fantastic day tomorrow, for three minutes at least.
 
The great advantage of forums is the breadth of expertise and Wayne gets my thanks for the information and reality he has provided.

I looked at 13 Raymond Tusk and it is a roughie but a possibility.

Strongest international field ever.
I like so may horses.
Am thinking 2 Mer De Glace the Japanese Star, 5 Southern France, 11 Finch and 1 and 12.
Used to holiday in Horsham as a kid so have a soft spot for one of the few local horses 18 Surprise Babie who may surprise (groan).
 
I've, for some time, exercised the the thought of breading humans with specific traits to the point of the absurd; in the hope that with all the 'wastage' the occasional throw back that gives chance to the 'champion' thus negating the suffering of those given up to all the abnormalities of inbreading concurred in the experiments and thus distracting the overly critical eye...
Luckily the experiment has been run for me, in some cases for centuries, and the exhibits are on display in many marqueis tomorrow... Sadly not a champion amongst them.

I’ll have a flutter on Finche, Vow and Declare and Latrobe. Hopefully one of them will get up because I got Neufbosc in the butcher’s sweep :rolleyes:
