Why do car drivers try to kill cyclists?

Out this morning on a bike ride through the hills of Perth and had someone deliberately try to hit me. I was riding along and heard a car coming past me real slowly, took no notice. But after he started to take a real long time to get past I thought something was up. When I looked over he was trying to get as close to me as possible with his wing mirror. My question is why?? What purpose does this serve? Why are people such mindless, arrogant A%^$#holes?

And don't come back with this crap with we shouldn't be on the road, pay taxes, ride on the footpath (which for your information is illegal), blah, blah, blah. I'm not interested in that ****.

My question is simply why do you (if you are one of these d!ckheads) deliberately put my life at risk for no obvious reason?:mad:

hello,

who knows 2bad, plenty of idiots out there

make sure have have insurance, our group Bicycle Victoria has insurance for cyclists which is outstanding, covers income, medicals, damage to bike etc

thankyou

Since riding motorcycles on the road since I have had a licence I've come to the conclusion that you simply need to take risks everytime you don the helmet.
With my car driver's hat on, I have seen some stupid things bike both motorcyclists and bicyclists. Some drivers get stressed by two wheeler's actions, as I have. Some simply don't control their anger and may take it out in ways you have explained.
Putting on my bike rider's hat again there are two things I need to do.
1. Set a good example. I am hard to see and I do scare other users of the road when they do see me. They have a genuine fear of causing an accident. Two push bikes riding side by side on a narrow laned road is a real obstacle to overcome.
2. Ride defensively and expect everyone is out to get you. It's cold comfort to be able to blame a car driver for the accident when your spine is snapped and you are filled with gravel rash.

No easy answer to your post. Accept the dangers, ride on bike paths or stop riding are your choices unfortunately.

Stay safe,

Cheers,

I agree that there are some cyclists out there who don't do us any favours. If we want the respect on the roads we do have to earn it. That aside, the mind boggles at the level of intelligence of some of these people.

Unfortunately most people don’t believe the roads are for every-one, only powered vehicles.
I ride over 250 Ks a week and every time I’m out there some-one will remind me of that fact by just missing one of us.
Education will come in some form down the track with over 1 million bike sales annually.
Bike awareness along the lines of the “look left, look right, look bike” ads we had years ago would be a help.
Just hope we live long enough to see the change in attitudes.

Cyclists occasionally do some interesting things on the road, the kind of things the same person would be unlikely to do in their car.

Probably for the same reason that some cyclists expect drivers to take more care for the cyclists safety than they are prepared to do themselves. There are idiots on the road and some drive cars and others ride bikes.

I've said it before if you ride a bike on a public road you're looking for trouble, it's dangerous enough in a car.

You get their number plate and report the incident to police.

Cyclists are an obstacle for a car driver to negotiate.Especially when the cyclist is riding past a parked car at the same time a car is approaching from the other way. This leaves a narrow carriageway for a vehicle coming from behind and errors in judgement can be made.

Most of the time cars have to drive near or over the centre line to give a safe distance to a bicycle rider whose line is never constant.
I.e. moving out and around parked cars, avoiding holes and rocks near the side of the road and crossing roads in a non-car manner.

And this ...
I don't have an attitude problem, it's just that I am better than you.

obvisiously, if someone acts in a criminal way, you should report it. If this happened as you say, then it was with intent and therefore an assault at the bare minimum, and probably more.

As to why they did it, no one will ever know unless this person confesses. Why did the man throw his daughter off the bridge, why did that 80yr women get raped, why did that kid slam his car into a stobey pole? Answers we'll never get.

I ride a bike too. I have seen cars do stupid things. At times it has looked they have done them on purpose.

I drive a car too. I have seen bicyclists do some really stupid dangerous things too. Just because a bike is allowed on a certain road doesn't mean one should actually ride it.

I'll give you an example. In SA, there is a very nice road to drive up, Belair rd. It's a very steep climb. Bikers use it for training. That is all very fine. However, there are no lights on this road. It is a very narrow road even for two cars opposing each other. Often, I've seen riders on the road during rush hour. Sure it's legal and sure it is meant to be a shared road. But honestly, it's suicide to ride up it during rush hour. I've even seen people during it in winter in the dark without night time outerwear on.

So in closing, if this incident happened as you say, you should definitely report it. It could be the beginning of a mad person getting ready to take someone out. But only you and that driver will ever know the truth.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a stobey pole? A pole that has street lights on it?

Yes and they also carry electrical wires. Usually a car ends up wrapped around one at least once a week. Last night it was a young driver whose car then caught on fire leaving him trapped inside. He is fighting for his life.

Stobie poles are a South Australian invention.

They are far better than the treated pine poles used in Vic and WA but are not something to wrap a car around.

While on the topic of SA's electricity infrastructure, what style is the following pole head ?
I've only ever seen them in SA.

The above image is from the east coast of Yorke Peninsula which incidently would make a nice bike ride.

Because they can. They're not going to lose against an argument with a bicycle are they?

I rode my bike to uni every day and I saw it all. The best one was when a driver yelled out the window to me "Use your hand signals next time". Funny thing was, I was going straight ahead!

Apparently there is some clown who has taken a dislike to the bike lanes on Anzac Highway here in Adelaide and regularly places broken glass at random locations in the lanes to create as many punctures as he/she can.

Seems like they got a few interstate and local victims riding between Glenelg and the city during the recent bike event.

I hate to think what would be going on in that little mind on a daily basis

For the 20 points:D

I use to ride a motorcycle. But too many people were trying to run me off the road in the most bizarre way they could.

Actually, my 23 year old son has come home tonight and commented that he and his friends reckon that the same thing is starting to happen with pedestrians - drivers speeding up as though to hit them! What is happening out there.....
