Las Vegas

As they say, "Europe is 90% History and 10% Geography;
America is 90% Geography, and 10% History
and Aus is 10% History, 10% Geography, 40% Fosters, and 40% Tooheys. " ;)

PS If you're travelling single, and aren't worried about roughing it, you can get a greyhound pass, and travel bludy miles in a fortnight. :2twocents. You meet heaps of people of course.

I went right around the States in about 2 weeks as I recall. (flew across the midwest on one leg) . Including Washington DC. Did some crazy things like rent a car in Salt Lake City, and in 24 hours did a round trip of Yellowstone, - not recommended lol (not much sleep that day).

Trouble with losing $14.40 per hour in Vegas, you can be sure that $4.40 of it is going to the mafia. Whereas bushwalking in Yosemite,
a) you will spend less, and b) you can be sure that it's all going to a great cause, a long-term healthy pact with Mother Nature ;)

Anyway mate - let us know what you did when you get back ;)

PS On another trip there (business) I flew over the Rockies heading for LA (I think), and it was one of the hairiest flights I've ever had, they had to pick a break in the clouds, and then dive bombed through it ( for some unknown reason) , lightning the works . Still, as the little girl said staring out the window at the thunderstorm (to her sister hiding under the bed ) ... " I think God is trying to photograph me!!" . As someone said, the altitude you achieve during your earthly experience is mainly based in your attitude ;)

A guy climbs Lover's Leap, California as fast as he can.... and without any safety equipment!
PS this bloke is absolutely mad!!.

400 feet in 4m 25 secs = about 1 m every 2 secs !

So i need a
Passport
medical insurance
Book my accomodation
Book my flight (any online sites suggestions)

Take some USA currency cash from here
When i am over there i can use Visa

Get a Phone Card
Yes to all of that, although of course get a phone card after you get there.

And remember that the yanks are big on that vulgar habit called tipping. Keep a wad of relatively small notes for palming out left, right, and centre, and be aware that taxi drivers and the like are not backward in coming forward when it comes to asking for or simply taking tips. If they don't think you've given them enough, they'll often short-change you and then glare at you daring you to ask for the rest of your money back!

Hi all

Absolutely awesome thanks for taking the trouble with the information.

You guys recommend driving yourself around? If so will i need an international licence?

Tasmanian
Happy to have a beer with you, at this stage i really am not sure on dates because of my wifes work commitments etc. But if it works out by all means.

Cheers

here's two more maps to similar scale -
Note that in WA - they have an occasional game of two up up at Lake Disappointment (just south of Rudall R Nat Park) ;) - much cheaper than Vegas mate.

PS looks like Norwich to Lands End is about the same as Perth to Kalgoorlie ;) -
and you don't have to dodge bludy kangaroos all the way :2twocents

(and a trip from Perth to the SA border - is like a trip from Lands End to Dover - Calais - thru Belgium and Holland and Germany to Denmark)

Drive yourself - ? for sure (unless I guess you're staying put in a city). Just remember to stay on the wrong side of the road - and no need for int licence these days.

btw, if in winter, say Dec, and if you plan to go into some of the colder parts, (Tahoe, Mt Heavenly, Yellowstone - ice common) then go 4 wheel drive. Don't amend anything - (like car rental agreements) - usually costs.

As for accommodation - listen to kgee lol - depends if you have a car yes?

I stayed once in a small hotel in Texas - complete with square dancing - all good fun, and (just like in the Natl Parks) you get to see the best faces of USA

but Vegas?? - like - you won't see much square dancing in Vegas mate, it's nearly all the horizontal tango ;)

Incidentally, SG with google maps, you can get satellite plan views, as well as horizontal street views - you hardly need to go there mate lol - one day it will be in real time , and you'll be able to look in the windows lol.

Also you will see Grand Canyon there - (due east of Vegas, south of Cedar City) . :2twocents. (bludy brilliant this google ;)) - I guess you know that you can zoom in and see your own house with this damned "spooky snooping eye thing" - see what the neighbour's are doing in their back yard that's making your dog bark lol

Oh.

Nearly forgot.

DO MONUMENT VALLEY.

Go with the indians and do their day trip around the valley.
Ive been fortunate enough to see many amazing things in my travels.
Monument valley is a stand out!

(as was Carmen Electra in a bar in San Diago.--I didnt know who she was till after the conversation)---a truely amazing thing!

Or if you really want something different, go to the former Portugese colony of Macau. Its like a small dose of Europe in the middle of Asia, with all the frills of Gambling. But be warned, its a small place where gambling is the main economy - 2006 saw it make more money from gambling than Las Vegas did.

One hour ferry ride from Hong Kong, and see the amazing amount of construction work going on, to build mroe casinos!

Thanks again people,

2020 those pics didn't come through just a x on the left hand corner and blank. Re: American humour

SG, I'm gonna assume that the problems "somewhere out there in cyberspace".

But here's one of those youtube addresses, and from there you can find heaps of others. ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLImNkPkTaY&eurl=

I'm also assuming you can see the "street view" of Vegas - I kinda thought the photo of the stretch limousine was appropriate for Vegas. - bloody posers lol.

Bit like the scene from Crocodile Dundee, where he insists his black chauffeur is from some tribe or other (when he tears the boomerang off the car and throws it - I take it you know the difference between a boomerang and a Cadillac? - not gonna embarrass us Aussies over there I hope throwing bits of cars around in the streets ? lol )

Ahh what the hek - you only live once !! - do what you bludy like m8 !! lol.

PS Santob has a point you know - Macau "has been waiting 420 odd years for you.." as the ad goes -

Hey Santob, ever seen a game of Jai-ali or Hai-Ali or whatever. They march on to the tune of William Tell Overture . And to this day, that is my preferred ring tone on my mobile lol. Always remember the Jaiali when it rings ;)

I think Mitchener wrote a chapter of "Tales of the South Pacific" about Macau as well - some pirate or other I forget. But that old fort there sheesh, and St Pauls fascade - what a brilliant story those walls could tell.

"Sometimes too you see walls wince,
And catch a breath, some subtle pain -
Loved ones who have moved on since,
Read the walls for subtle hints,
Old eroding finger prints.....
That won't return again.
........
and Then there's Hamlet's ghostly Dad,
Countless more who nightly walk -
Apparitions crude and sad,
Hide in walls of any "pad",
Never speaking - drive you mad!!
Ahh, if only walls could talk." :)

ahh sorry - getting carried away again.

tech - here's (some of) monument valley - and if you zoom in real close - you can see some indians hiding in the hills. (they've probably run away from the medical team ;))

Hey,

I went over there last year (March). You dont need an international drivers licence over there. I hired a car in LA, hawaii and Vegas.

Vegas is great! i stayed at the luxor but i wouldnt recommend it as it right at the southern end of the strip. Go for one more central but you will pay more to stay on the strip. if you can afford it stay

It does that a full week to explore all the shops and casinos in vegas. Lots of factory outlet shopping. Take a drive south on the Highway to LA 20 min's there a massive outlet shop and casino....in the middle of the dessert...

shout out if you got any other questions.

Ive going back over in May next year.
